You never really realize how dull, dark and dingy your work area is until someone changes a light bulb. Have you noticed that?

If you work in a typical office building, you probably have fluorescent lighting above you. Those lights dim over time, slowly – so slow that you don’t really notice it. Then, one of them will burn out or start to flicker and facilities maintenance (or whoever takes car of this sort of thing in your neck of the woods) will come by and change out that bulb. Suddenly, you find yourself blinking and squinting to protect your eyes from the intensity and brightness of this newcomer to your little world.

The new, brighter light reveals things you hadn’t noticed before; a condensation ring where you normally set your drink while you work, an odd, discolored patch of fabric on your cube wall, a fine layer of dust accumulated behind your monitor- all hidden thusfar by the poor light you’ve grown accustomed to.

As your eyes adjust, you realize you can read your own sticky notes more clearly than you did before. Amazing!

But before you know it, that bulb falls into step with the rest of them, slowly dimming without you even being aware of it.

Until another one burns out and you find yourself blinking again…

Amidst all the handsfree device / conservation hoopla, like motion sensors that control when your water faucet goes on, and when to dispense paper towels or start the hand dryer, and even when to flush the toilet, I’m glad that no one has (yet or that I am aware of) created a motion sensor toilet paper dispenser. Just thinking about it makes me remember the old arcade version of ‘Track and Field’ that had the rolly ball controller that you spun and spun and spun until you had a rolly ball controller burn on your palm…

In the toilet stall of the future:

I’m starting to think that 3D is really just the rice & beans used to cover up the crappy enchilada dinner you just ordered.

Ever been to one of those places where you order the Mexican dinner plate and you get this plate (be careful – it’s hot!) covered in rice and beans and pico and you have to dig through all that filler to get to the ‘main dish’ only to find that it really doesn’t taste that good so you leave it alone and fill up on rice and beans?

Kinda starting to think that’s 3D movies. They wrap it up in (supposed) shiny to distract you from the fact that they’re slipping you last week’s chicken that’s been over spiced and reheated.

Bleh.

Dick Grayson was the youngest member of a circus highwire act known as ‘The Flying Graysons’.  When his family was killed right in front of him, it struck Bruce Wayne right where it hurts because it was like watching his own parents die all over again.

Bruce felt such a kinship for the orphaned boy that he offered to take him in and become his guardian.  Dick became Robin, partner to Batman and a crime fighter in his own right.

He was 8 years old.

And that’s why I don’t want Robin in Batman 3.

Hollywood is enamored with itself and as such, likes to A) change things and B) play homage to its own past.  To Hollywood, Dick Grayson / Robin is really Burt Ward or, even worse (I know, how could anything be worse?) Chris O’Donnel.  If Robin appears in Batman 3, once again they’ll get some 30 yr old actor to portray him and then wtf was the point?

Robin is a KID.

Yes he grows up.  Yes he is replaced once in a while (what are we, on #4 right now?) but the point is still the same – he is a kid!  An 8 year old kid, and Hollywood doesn’t like that for a lot of reasons.

First and foremost – having kids on set costs more.  You can’t keep them up all day and night like you can an adult actor, and they have to go to school which means tutors.  That’s why half the time the kid you see on screen isn’t even really a kid, it’s some twenty-something who just happens to look young enough to play sixteen.

Second, I don’t think they really know what to do with Robin.  They like the silly Robin from the tv show, not the rebellious Robin struggling to figure out who he is from the comics.  Plus, you have this Dark Knight who strikes fear in the hearts of the bad guys and he’s running around with a kid wearing bright green and yellow?

They don’t know what to do with him.

And because they don’t know what to do with him, I’d rather not see him in Batman 3.

We had what became dubbed as the ‘creepy stalker Superman’ from actor Bandon Routh who, in my humble opinion, played the part [...]]]> Rumors abound regarding all of the comic books movies coming down the pipe and Superman 2 (or is it 6?) is on the list.  But the reboot of Superman didn’t do so well, remember?

We had what became dubbed as the ‘creepy stalker Superman’ from actor Bandon Routh who, in my humble opinion, played the part as stiff and unemotional as Keanu Reeves.  Who wants to see a sequel to that?

So there are a couple things I think they could so that would make the movie successful and, since I know the heads of DC and Warner Brothers are constantly trolling my little website (Uh… right.), I figured I’d lay out the changes they need to make if they want to see this next movie fly…

Get rid of silly Lex Luthor

The original Superman came out in 1978 and was great.  Christopher Reeves played the iconic part along side Gene Hackman as an over the top version of Lex Luthor as the ultimate silly supervillain.  Well, it’s thirty years later people.  Lex Luthor has been retconned into the CEO of a mega corporation and has even held the office of the President of the United States; the time for silly Lux running around in wigs and conning dying women out of their fortunes is over.  Play him straight or don’t play him at all.

Which actually wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.  Superman has other enemies just as Batman has other enemies.  Pull one of them out and dust em off for the movie treatment.  Let’s see Braniac or Darkseid give the man of steel a fight we’ll never forget.  Or better yet – since you love trilogies so much (Sorry John and Dale), let’s bring in Doomsday and do it up right, kill Superman in the first film, deal with the aftermath in the second and his rebirth/return in the third.  I’d pay to see that.

Start Fresh

Look, we love the Christopher Reeves movies, we really did.  Even 4.  Okay, not 4.  Or 3.  But we watched them because of Reeves.  They were great movies, but when Chris Nolan sat down to do Batman, he didn’t try to paint a homage to Tim Burton and look how utterly fantastic Batman and The Dark Knight turned out!  Do that with Superman.  If you want to draw from previous materials, draw from the comics, not the movies, not the tv shows, dear GOD not from Smallville – you can do it and do it well.  Chris Nolan proved it.

Drop Brandon Routh

I’m sorry, I’m sure Brandon is a great guy but when I see him, I see creepy stalker Superman.  His recent run on Chuck, one of my favorite shows on tv, was distracting because I kept thinking, “Don’t trust creepy stalker Superman! Don’t trust him!”

His portrayal of Supes was flat, unemotional.  If it was the intention of the powers that be for him to be emotionally detached then I suppose he hit the mark spot on, but it was a terrible thing to do to him and to us.  Give us some emotion in our Superman, some passion.

So.  That’s it.  My suggestions for a killer Superman flick; no more silly Lex, a different enemy for Superman to fight, a fresh break from the previous films and a new actor in the title role.

We’ll have to wait and see what they actually do, but not long.  I think they have the Superman film greenlit for 2011 or 2012…

I think it’s sort of a staple of the genre now.  If you’re going to have a futuristic/scifi [...]]]> If, like me, you’re an avid watcher of tv and movies, and a reader of books, you may have noticed a trend towards the disastrous future.  Apocalypse is in and in big.  I mean, it’s everywhere we look.

I think it’s sort of a staple of the genre now.  If you’re going to have a futuristic/scifi story, it damned well better show us how badly we, as a species, have screwed everything up.  Right now at theaters around the country, we have ‘The Book of Eli’, a post-apocalyptic tale of the future.  On TV we have ‘Dollhouse’ that depicts (in Epitaph One and supposedly, Epitaph Two airing this week), a future where science and technology have caused an apocalypse and the overall destruction of all civilization as we know it.

It’s the end all be all of trends.

So I ask you – where has the positive future gone?

In Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek (rebooted last summer and done so quite successfully), we have a future where yes, bad stuff happened and we humans were the cause, but we’ve moved passed that and are now soaring through the stars exploring strange new worlds and all that jazz.  Kinda positive, right?  But it’s the exception to the rule anymore.  I mean, look at what we’ve seen from Hollywood in the past few years:

Jericho

Post apocalypse America where the folks of a small town struggle to survive after nuclear bomb s have destroyed civilization as we know it.

The City of Ember

Based on the Young Adult novels of Jeanne DuPrau, The City of Ember shows a world that was torn by war, so they built a city underground for protection.

The Road

Another post-apocalyptic tale – this one about a father and his young son across a landscape blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed all civilization and, apparently, almost all life on earth.

Jeremiah

This series takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where most of the adult population has been wiped out by a deadly virus.

I mean, the list goes on and on.

So I ask you again – where has the positive gone?

Are we done with the feel good adventure tale?  With the bright, shining future of the human race, all full of potential and excitement?

If you’ve read this blog for a bit, you probably have a sense of what my humor is like and what my writing voice tends to be.  I’ve been influenced by a great many things in my life and I wanted to share just a bit of that with you this week.

In no particular order, let’s dive in.

Television as a Babysitter.

I’m of that generation whose parents used the old boob tube as a babysitter; plop your kid down and let The Muppets take care of the rest.

I was born in ‘72, so that means I watched a lot of tv growing up. I mean, a lot.  I learned my ABC’s from PBS, watching Sesame Street, The Electric Company, Reading Rainbow (With LeVar Burton), Mister Rogers and 3-2-1 Contact, among others. I had Muppets in the morning and Muppets at night (The Muppet Show).

It didn’t end there, though. Thanks to WGN in Chicago, I went on many an adventure with The Lone Ranger and Tonto, swashed a little buckle with Zorro and learned a couple words of Spanish thanks to The Cisco Kid.

On weekends I would watch old movies with my grandmother, stuff like: Topper (1937 movie about a pair of ghosts ( Constance Bennett as Marion Kerby & Cary Grant as George Kerby ) who haunt a stuffy man named Cosmo Topper ( played by Roland Young ) and teach him to have a little fun), Harvey (1950 movie starring Jimmy Stewart as a mild mannered man, Elwood P. Dowd, with his head in the clouds. His sister, Veta Louise Simmons, and niece, Myrtle Mae, thinks he should be institutionalized because he’s nuts – no sane man walks around talking to a 6′3.5″ tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey, after all…), The Charlie Chan flicks (the series began in 1931 with a white guy ( stupid, I know – but Hollywood was stupid back in the day. Wait… ‘was stupid’…? Um… ) playing the detective created by Earl Derr Biggers in 1923 for a novel published in 1925. He and his ‘Number One Son’ ( I wonder if Roddenberry was influenced by this series? ), would run around solving crimes. Grams loved these. She was also a massive fan of Agatha Christie), Agatha Christie (tons of stuff appeared based on her characters. Masterpiece Theater often ran series or movies featuring Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple and even though these were probably more adult orientated, I often watched with Grams or my mom).

In addition to all of that, I was often left alone to search the dial for whatever was on, and I’d come across things like: The Three Stooges ( my aunt forbid my cousin and I from watching these shorts because she said they were too violent, so we always made a point of watching them whenever we could… ), The Bowery Boys, The Honeymooners, The Little Rascals, I Love Lucy, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, My Three Sons, Gidget, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, Scooby Doo, The Waltons, The Monkees, The Land of the Lost, Lost in Space and The Time Tunnel.

A lot of tv, I know – but that was the way it was done back then. When you had parents who both worked or stuff going on, setting your kid down in front of the tv for a couple hours so you could get stuff done just worked.

And it didn’t stop there.  Very young, I was exposed to things like: Spider-Man (both the animated series from the 60’s and the live action show from the 70’s), The Super Friends, The Incredible Hulk, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Space: 1999, UFO, Batman, Wonder Woman, Shazam!, Buck Rogers, Whiz Kids (spin-off of Simon & Simon?), Automan, The Greatest American Hero, The Avengers, Doctor Who ( Saturday nights on PBS ), Captain America, Planet of the Apes, Logan’s Run, Battlestar Galactica and The Saint, to name just a few.

All of these shows and movies had a hand in forming certain parts of me including; my sense of humor, my love of adventure stories and mysteries and, of course, science fiction and the incredible.

I wasn’t always left alone with the tv, a lot of shows I watched with my mom, my grams, my older brother, my dad or my uncle, who lived with us for a time.  The things that they liked to watch, I ended up watching with them.  Memories can be tricky things, colored by our own emotions and thinking. Part of me remembers not always being treated like a kid – almost like I was older than I was and, therefore, it was okay to expose me to stuff other kids weren’t watching/exposed to. Another part of me thinks that’s probably stupid and it was more likely that I was just in the room and they (adults) weren’t thinking that I was paying any attention.

My mom likes to tell the story of her watching a movie about babies being switched in the hospital. She didn’t think I was paying any attention at all when I suddenly got up, walked over to the front door, grabbed the knob, looked at her and said, “You tell me right now who my REAL mother is!”  So, apparently, I WAS paying attention and intended to leave right then and there to find my ‘real mom’…

I don’t want to give you the wrong impression and think that my life was filled with television, I had a lot of other stuff going on too (usual stuff like soccer, baseball, basketball, boy scouts), but it’s important to give you an idea of the kinds of things I was exposed to early on because they did have an impact.

Other things came along as well, and we’ll talk about those tomorrow.

If you’re a fan, you remember that the opening of Battlestar Galactica’s first and second seasons always ended with: “AND THEY HAVE A PLAN”. ‘They’ were the Cylons and ‘The Plan’ wasn’t necessarily apparent beyond ‘Frakking kill all the humans’. Which, if you’re a cybernetic lifeform bent on destroying your creators, isn’t such a bad plan, really.

I forget when that but of text went away, I’m sorry, I do. I don’t know if it was the third or fourth season, but it did go away. I DO remember thinking at the time, “Huh. What happened to ‘they have a plan’?” Never did find out cuz the show had it’s finale and the plan was never revealed.

Somewhere, sometime, I remember reading or listening to an interview or something wherein Ronald Moore said that the whole thing had been forced on them by the suits at the channel formerly known as ‘SciFi’. Some suit thought that the Cylons needed a plan and that we had to be told each week that there was a plan so it would make sense to us (Probably the same person who told Kevin Sorbo, “You know – you’re right. Thinking is hard. Scripts should be less about thinking and more about boobs. People like boobs.”. First chance he got, Moore pulled that line from the opening credits.

Still, it was one of those things that was left hanging and the fans wondered, “But – what about The Plan?”

Tuesday, there was an attempt at explaining it to us.

It failed.

The Plan is a feature length flick with old and new shots cobbled together to try and form a coherent story, I think it falls short of it’s ambitious intentions. You have new scenes blended with old shots from the show and they do that very cleverly despite actors having aged – I give them credit for that, but having watched the whole thing – I still have no idea what the hell it’s supposed to be about.

Some spoilers abound from this point on so, fair warning!

Returning are several characters – mostly the ’skin job’ Cylons including Caprica, Boomer, Leoben, Cavil and the rest. We relive the destruction of the colonies and the retreat of the human fleet through the eyes of the human Cylons. If there is any focus in the movie, I would say that it’s on Cavil, who has copies that move through the film and see things from different points of view. One version is with Anderson and the rebels on Caprica, another on Picon with Ellen Tigh, then on a ship with her and I think he then moves to Galactica where he tries to ‘run’ the others within the fleet and finish the destruction of the colonies.

It’s hard to find the point and the plot here, but I think they were trying to show how the two Cavil’s journey brings them to the same basic conclusions about the Final Five and their love of the human race and how, through their separate journey’s, they find that truth in completely different ways and take away from it different assumptions and plans for the future. But I feel it’s poorly executed.

While the blending of old and new is clever, it’s also confusing at times and feels forced at others.

There is that fantastic scene from the first season when Boomer wakes up in her flight suit, covered in water, dripping all over the floor. She has no idea how she got there and is freaking out. We know that she’s a Cylon – we saw her copy in the final moment of the mini-series, but she has no clue that she’s a sleeper. It’s creepy and intense – a wonderful moment.

In The Plan, they reveal that Cavil ‘woke her up’ to talk to her, to give her an assignment and then he keeps waking her up to talk some more from time to time. I feel that this took away from the original moment. I didn’t want to know that – I think it was a better moment on its own with a little mystery left to it. Sometimes, it’s better not to explain everything.

Sadly, the things we want explained aren’t, which just makes it worse.

Leoben is obsessed with Starbuck – we already knew this. Did we need to see the moment he became obsessed? Probably not. It felt like they jammed that piece in so they could show some Starbuck footage because she wasn’t really in the movie and they knew she had to be in it somehow. Same with Apollo – let’s show him helping people off a shuttle – why? No reason! It had nothing to do with anything! Just an excuse to show him and somehow make it seem more legitimate.

…as you can tell, not my favorite movie.

Overall, the movie felt like a miss-mash of disjointed moments. I think the only thing I truly loved about it was the music/soundtrack. I don’t think it answered any questions.

Sadly, I think that when you base a movie on something that was forced on you by someone in a suit, and summarily tossed the moment you thought you could get away with tossing it, that movie is going to suck.

And that’s what happened with The Plan, a poor epilogue to an otherwise outstanding television show.

This could be the stupidest movie ever made. Or it could be hilarious.  I DON’T KNOW!

It’s Halloween night, and slacker video clerk Stan Helsing – along with his insanely sexy ex-girlfriend, best buddy and an exotic dancer/’massage therapist’ – detours into a town cursed by the biggest monsters in movie history: Freddy, Jason, Pinhead, Leatherface, Chucky, & Michael Myers. But when Stan discovers that he’s a direct descendant of the legendary monster hunter Van Helsing, the four will have to survive a night of hell raisers, hockey masks, psycho dolls, pleather faces, creepy hitchhikers, vampire strippers, killer karaoke, and lots of hot chicks kissing each other. The one and only Leslie Nielsen of AIRPLANE! and THE NAKED GUN co-stars in this hysterical horror spoof written and directed by one of the guys who brought you SCARY MOVIE.

Season of the Witch.

I know nothing about this except that it has a FREAKY trailer.

So. I’ve noticed a trend. No love for SciFi (and Fantasy).

ABC recently told the makers of the new ‘V’ remake/reboot not to play up the ‘SciFi’ aspects of the show. In fact, they asked them not to even mention the word ‘alien’ in any of the advertising and all [...]]]> Where’s the love for SciFi?

So. I’ve noticed a trend. No love for SciFi (and Fantasy).

ABC recently told the makers of the new ‘V’ remake/reboot not to play up the ‘SciFi’ aspects of the show. In fact, they asked them not to even mention the word ‘alien’ in any of the advertising and all because they’re worried about the dreaded ‘genre’ label.

In a year where the tv landscape has a lot of new, returning and different genre shows (Lost, Fast Forward, Fringe, Stargate:Universe, Sanctuary, Dollhouse, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Legend of the Seeker, Smallville (bleh) & Supernatural, to name just a few), I can’t believe that they are still taking such a wait and see attitude about genre shows.

To make matters worse, BestBuy has rearranged their DVD’s categories and Shelves in store. There are a couple stores that I frequent (because I’m a DVD addict) and, over the past 6 months to a year, I’ve noticed the genre shelves shrinking as titles are folded into other, ‘normal’ categories.

The SciFi section at these BestBuy stores is now completely gone. They went from one aisle, to three shelves (this one has 5 shelves per row), to one shelf, to no shelf. When they had just the one shelf, it had The Lord of the Rings movies, the Star Wars movies, Starship Troopers, Aliens, the Star Trek movies, Underworld and the X-movies. That was it. Everything else had been blended with ‘Action/Adventure’ or, in some cases, ‘Drama’.

While this was happening, I failed to notice that ‘Horror’ was ALREADY gone. I have no idea what they blended that into, but they did it.

This last week, as I went wandering through BestBuy, I noticed that they were done; SciFi was gone. Everything is now inside of ‘Action/Adventure’ or ‘Drama’ which is just so freaking stupid.

I can only imagine that they did this because someone, somewhere, thought that ‘SciFi’ was for losers and geeks, which just pisses me off.

I would argue that there are more people today enjoying genre entertainment than they are giving credit for. Not counting the tv shows above, look at the video games that are popular with gamers, look at the movies being made, the books being sold – the surge of ‘nerd culture’.

If anything, SciFi should be expanding on the shelf, not disappearing altogether.

Avatar.  I know, there’s been some people bitching about this and some praising it.  All I know is that I like what I see so far.  I think this could be really cool so check it out.

Gamer.  This has what could quite possibly be the stupidest commercial voice over ever.  “Gerard Butler hasn’t kicked this much butt since 300 years ago!”

Dude.  Seriously?  You’re that stupid?  I know that you’re trying to get people who liked the movie 300 to get into this flick, but, seriously?  300 years ago?  So, you’re saying that the movie 300, about Spartan’s defending their homeland from the Persian invasion – that took place in the 1700’s?

This is what happens when we stop focusing on education in public schools.

The Men Who Stare At Goats.  I… Just…  Ya know what?  I don’t know what to say here.  Watch the trailer.  I think George Clooney is 1000 times a better comedian than he ever is a ‘dramatic actor’.

The Fourth Kind. Um. Watch this in the day time. It’s a little freaky. It’s not a horror movie – it’s about peoples UFO abduction stories.

The Vampires Assistant.  Watch the trailer – this looks funny.

The Wolfman.  I really don’t like rehashing things over and over like Hollywood is prone to doing, but something about this appeals to me.  It’s a throwback to simpler times.  We’ve gotten so into special effects and transforming people into big dogs in werewolf movies, that it’s really nice to see them go back and tell a story with some style.  This looks fantastic.  check it out.

Aladin.  WHERE THE HELL IS ROBIN WILLIAMS?  Okay, not that version of the film.. Nope, this is a Bollywood flick and sure to be on someone’s list, somewhere, of top weird movies.
