Against all that is good and decent in the world, I signed up for a second go with CBS All Access so I could watch Picard. I have thoughts on Picard for another post. For this one, I want to talk about the CBS App for my PS4. Because it’s terrible.
This is my PS4 controller. To be more specific and in doing so, to brag, this is my Star Wars Battlefront II limited edition PS4 controller. Ya gotta brag, am I right?
Anyway. Every other streaming video app I use – Prime, Netflix, Hulu when I had it, Disney+, uses the X button for play/pause. Not CBS. WIth CBS, I have to pull the left stick down to open up a hover state, then I can choose to pause, rewind, fast forward, or play.
This is beyond stupid.
Also, the R1 and R2 buttons, if hit, will do a quick FF or RW – which in concept is swell, but in reality is a pain in the butt. Every third time or so that I set the damn controller down (or, more properly, when I toss it down on the bed covers), it triggers a fast forward. Bleh.
On top of that, let’s say I want to watch a show. I choose the show by selecting it and hitting X (good job!). Then I’m taken to a screen with options for episodes and seasons, depending on the show. I select the episode to each and hit X (good job!). Every other app in the world would start playing the episode now. Not CBS. CBS takes me to a screen with a picture from the episode, a summary, and a ‘watch’ button. Which I then have to select and hit X to watch.
Whoever engineered this app obviously likes extra clicks. Lots and lots of extra clicks.
Lastly, there is no ‘skip intro’ option that I can find. Look, I know you spent a lot of money on producing those what with the music and the video and sometimes the animation and special effects – I totally get it. And I will absolutely watch them. Once. Maybe twice. Then all they are is annoying as fuck. I don’t want to watch them anymore. I don’t want to have to dive for the remote to turn the tv down because 99% of them are A THOUSAND TIMES LOUDER than the normal episode audio. I want a nice ‘skip intro’ button that pops up the ay it does on EVERY OTHER FUCKING PLATFORM. Or, honestly, like it does on Netflix. And Disney+. And probably every other fucking platform. I don’t have the data to back that up – but I’m guessing more do it than not.
All of these things add up to annoy me every single time I open your app, CBS.
Oh – and despite my being on episode whatever of Picard, you can’t seem to remember that and always want me to watch episode 1…
Go home, CBS All Access… You’re drunk…
