Friday Flick: Batman and Harley Quinn

Batman and Harley QuinnUnofficial Description: It continues to surprise me how DC can manage to make some fairly fantastic animated movies, and fail miserably with live action movies. This is no exception.

Set (I believe) in the animated universe that began with the original Batman: The Animated Series, Batman and Harley Quinn is a fun, irreverent romp that calls back to how fun those characters were in that, and subsequent shows like Superman and Justice League.

When Batman and Nightwing (reuniting Kevin Conroy and Loren Lester in their roles as Batman and Nightwing) discover a plot by Poison Ivy (Paget Brewster) and Floronic Man (Kevin Michael Richardson) to turn all life on Earth into plant life using the same process that created Swamp Thing, they need Harley Quinn’s (Melissa Rauch) help to track down her former partner in crime.

Rauch does a fantastic job with Harley, who, upon gaining parole, is trying to live a crime-free life working as a waitress in a ‘super’ themed Hooters-like restaurant.

They push some boundaries with this flick, and it surprised me. First, Harley cusses. A lot. There’s a strong possibility that she and Nightwing have sex when he tracks her down, she kicks his butt and ties him to her bed. Batman figures it out immediately and it’s never actually confirmed except by Nightwing’s embarrassment and Harley saying later on something along the lines of, “45 minutes of naughty-fun time and he thinks he owns me.” It’s also alluded that there’s probably a romantic relationship between Harley and Ivy – which I think has been part of comics, but I’m not sure.

All of which was great! I enjoyed this flick a lot. Also REALLY enjoyed the animation style and character designs, which are all pre-New 52 and so much better than the crap they’ve been pushing out recently.

As of this writing, Batman and Harley Quinn is currently available as part of Prime and is loads better than any of the live action stuff, with the exception of Wonder Woman.

Official Description: Two legends return to the world of the Dark Knight in Batman and Harley Quinn, the newest entry in Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment’s series of DC Universe Original Movies. Spawned from an original story by animation icon Bruce Timm and featuring the voice of Kevin Conroy as Batman.
