Friday Flick: Birth of the Dragon

Birth of The DragonUnofficial Description: Well. I love Bruce Lee. Excited to have a new movie about his early days. Wish they would’ve made that movie instead of this one. I mean, who sits down and says, “I know! Let’s do a movie about Bruce Lee and tell the whole story from the point of view of some random white guy!” “Brilliant!”

Seriously?

Because that’s what this movie is about. Some white dude taking kung fu lessons from Bruce Lee and then switching to a different master and then getting those two to fight because he has the hots for a Chinese immigrant who is being forced to work as a waitress to pay off her debt for coming to America. And if that wasn’t bad enough for you, Bruce Lee is portrayed as a heartless, total dick – which is not the impression I have ever gotten from any of the stuff I’ve seen or read in the past.

I was very disappointed by this movie on multiple levels.

Notice the official description and trailer don’t really sell the core of what this movie is about, and make you think the focus is on Lee – which it’s not…

Official Description: Young Bruce Lee is trying to make a name for himself while working as a martial arts instructor in 1964 San Francisco. When Lee meets Wong Jack Man, he challenges the kung fu master to a no-holds-barred fight that became the stuff of legend.
