Official Description: When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – led by expert codebreaker Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.
Unofficial Description: Hands-down one of the best SciFi flicks I’ve seen.
I didn’t watch this movie for a long time for one reason. Before I get to that though – let me just say that I love Amy Adams. I think she is one of the best actresses out there today. She was completely wasted in the two movies from DC that sort of resemble characters from the comic books in that they wear familiar costumes… But that’s where the similarities end. Trouble with the Curve is a fantastic movie, and her character amazing. She holds her own against Clint Eastwood and really shines throughout that movie. So – I love Amy Adams. Having said that, they paired her in this with whats his face – Jeremy Renner. Whom I really don’t like. He’s a horrible Hawkeye. His other movies haven’t resonated with me at all – and I’ve tried. He feels like the kind of actor Hollywood really, really wants us to love but he only has the one character and just keeps changing clothes and saying different lines. In that, he reminds me of Will Ferrel.
So – I didn’t watch this movie because of him. Until I did. Mostly at the insistence of other people who said I would love it. And they were right. The focus was primarily on Adams and that helped a lot.
I don’t want to spoil anything here. I’ll just say that I loved the movie. It took a few minutes to ramp up but it did so masterfully. Also, the story had a great gut punch I didn’t see coming but once it arrived (see what I did there?) I saw how well they did the whole thing.
Highly recommend this one.
