Friday Flick: Lucy

LucyOfficial Description: From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. Lucy also stars Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman.

Unofficial Description: I’ve had this one on the shelf for quite some time. The trailer hooked me and I wanted to see the movie on the big screen but, as happens far too often, wasn’t able to make that happen.

Scarlett Johansson delivers a powerful performance. I’m gonna call what happens to her ‘the event’ for vagueness. When the event happens, she flips a switch and goes from from a scared shitless, blubbering victim, into something far, far different. She is cold and calculating. In that moment, she takes complete and utter control as both an actress, and a character, and your choice is to get out of her way or go along for the ride.

The plot has some holes, but in true Besson fashion, pushes in the way science fiction is supposed to push you and make you think.

Here’s hoping Disney and Marvel paid attention because thinking she can’t hold her own as the star of a movie franchise is completely ridiculous.

Black Widow in 2016, anyone?

I haven’t brought myself to watch the movie. The trope that perpetuates the myth that we only use 10% of our brain bugs me. If they had made up some other plot device, I would have seen it in the theaters.

By the way, I enjoyed the two installments of Cahill series. Can’t wait for the next one.
