The Zone
There’s this moment where everything comes together and just clicks. Mind, body and soul line up like the planets in the heavens, and you just write.
The pros will talk about the work involved in writing, the dedication. You have to put your butt in the chair and write. I don’t disagree. But there are those rare moments when it all just flows as if someone has opened a tap in your brain. You’re in The Zone. The character voices are so clear, the story unfolding before your eyes and you have to write it all down or else lose it forever. You don’t want to stop to eat or drink, and the bathroom breaks annoy the hell out of you because you just have this insatiable need to write the words.
The world falls away when you’re in The Zone. You have tunnel vision.
I love The Zone, but it can be difficult on the people around you. They don’t understand and you can’t explain it because your brain power is dedicated to the story. Maybe your ability to verbalize is reduced to a series of grunts. One grunt for ‘more coffee’. Two for ‘get away! Can’t you see I’m writing the greatest thing ever created?!’
Three for ‘yes, of course I want a grilled cheese! Who wouldn’t?’
Do you ever enter The Zone?

I live for those moments when I am in the zone, usually it’s grinding away at the keyboard though.
