Do you remember when tv shows had theme songs?

It seems like every show on these days has a quick logo/name splash scene and then it cuts right to the ‘entertainment’. Not too long ago, shows began with theme songs that were catchy, humworthy and got stuck in your head.  When you heard it, you were instantly reminded of the show.  Sometimes, they even made it onto the radio, became hits of a sort.

Heck, I remember buying a certain song by the Rembrandts for a little show called ‘Friends’.  Going back further, there was the theme for ‘Cheers’, ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ – even a little diddy from ‘The Greatest American Hero’.

Whatever happened to theme songs for tv shows?  I, for one, miss them.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of my favorites from a bygone era.

The Greatest American Hero (Believe it or not)

Cheers (Where everybody knows your name)

The Dukes of Hazzard (Good ‘ol boys)

Friends (I’ll be there for you)

Growing Pains (As Long As We’ve Got Each Other)

Magnum P.I.

…and who can forget this one?

    1. The Remembrants actually put out a couple of really good albums.
    2. Unfortunately, TV shows don't have theme songs anymore because they realized that people weren't sitting through the intro and were changing channels. It is an unfortunate consequence of our attention shortened world.

is it that people were changing channels or is it that DVR's were invented? Have you noticed – something scheduled for 8 pm comes on at 7:58? Or 7:59? Something scheduled to go off at 9 goes off at 9:01? and the DVR's don't capture those times. So the idea is to force you to be in your seat ahead of time because the show is gonna just -start-. No preamble, no intro… no theme song 🙁

YES! Absolutely with the sneaky minute extra here, minute less there. And then, 2 minutes into the show, when it was -supposed- to start, they stick a 5 minute commercial break. But you can’t go make tea or take a bathroom break, oh, no. Because they might sneakily change the adverts around, have the long one at the half-hour mark and just a quickie to start off with.

    Serious annoyance.

So I set the dvr for a couple minutes early, couple minutes late and lovelovelove the fastforward button. Which overshoots all the time.

    Stupid button. Grrarg.

I do the same thing. BUT, sometimes I forget that I'm watching something recorded and I'll sit through some commercials before it dawns on me that, hey – I don't have to watch these!
