Me being me, I sent Mister Modesitt an email letting him know that I had written up my encounter meeting him at the local B&N for the blog. Here’s the Gist:
I was one of the fans who met and was able to ask questions of you at your recent trip to a Denver Barnes & Noble. I wanted to thank you again – you were incredibly open and generous with everyone and I was delighted to meet you.
I wrote up my thoughts on the experience at my blog and wanted to share it with you. I hope that I did not misquote or misrepresent you in any way. http://www.atfmb.com/2009/09/30/meeting-a-legend-l-e-modesitt-jr/
Thank you for all your words both written and spoken.
He responded quite quickly, which amazed and delighted me:
Dear Patrick —
Thank you for your email and your kind thoughts, both there and in your blog, which I had read earlier, incidentally.
There are a couple of errors that I’d appreciate your changing, if you could.. if not, I certainly understand, and appreciate such a flattering picture. One is that the editor was Ben Bova, not Jim Baen… and the second is that, while I work hard, there’s no way I can produce 25,000 words a week. It’s generally 2,500 words a day. And I’m an early riser, but with all that I do [it takes me a while to slog through 2 1/2 – 4 miles in the hills at my age], I don’t get to the computer before 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning.
Again… my thanks for your coming to the signing and for your most kind reporting of it.
After freaking out for a little while about the line ‘which I read earlier’ – he read my blog. Wow. Now I wish I’d cleaned the place up a bit first. Vacuumed. Maybe added a throw pillow or two…
After geeking out, I went ahead and made the changes he requested to the original post, and you can see it here: Meeting a Legend: L.E. Modesitt Jr.
He is a class act, folks.
