Mentioned before – I’m trolling through my comic book collection, which spans 1977-1995/6ish, because I’m feeling nostalgic and want to share. I invite you to tag along with me cuz I hope it’ll be fun – I’m even taking pics of the covers with my iPhone (sorry about the quality there but honestly – who wants to go through and scan all these things?!) so you can see what I see. I’m also telling stories, which is always fun.
And since I’m grabbing boxes at random, we never know what we’re gonna get until we get it. Got it? Good – let’s move on then people! Oh – and you can always click on the images for a bigger photo.
Random Box #2
Way back before Hollywood did any reboots, comic books were rebotting like mad. Especially over at DC where they had a lot of Golden Age/Silver Age sorta stuff. There was this whole ‘Crisis’ mega-crossover thing that I absolutely hated. But we’ll get to that if I come across any of those. In the meantime, we have this: The Man of Steel.
This was a reboot of, well, Superman. I think the title probably gave that away. It was a way of rebooting the franchise, breathing a little life into it again and of appealing to a new audience. Sound familiar? Sound like anything you’ve heard recently from Hollywood?
Yep. Me too.
This liminted series wasn’t bad. I have to admit, I was never much of a Superman fan. I mean, I liked Superman, I read an occasional comic – really liked the movies with Christopher Reeves – but there’s just something about a guy who is pretty much indestructible that doesn’t appeal to me. Yeah, he’s got an achiles heel – Kryptonite, which means you always know what the big bad is gonna do/use to get to him. That’s one of the problems I’ve had with Smallville – it’s always about the Kryptonite or the – or the ‘meteor infected’ as they call em.
Still, this series was good. I bought it after all.
I liked this series loads better than the Superman reboot. I never got Aquaman either – and he gets a lot of crap tossed at him for being a background, throw away character. But that just shows what we know. Treat him with a little respect and you come up with a series like this one, rebooting Aquaman and showing him as a complicated character worthy of our attention.
He didn’t actually get much attention – but still!
I know that they rebooted him again, this time sans hand, but this series with the blue outfit and the Atlantean intrigue will always be my favorite. Showed me that he really was a cool character. Plus, there was the “SHOCKING SECRET ORIGIN OF AQUAMAN!” and who can pass that up?
Boy howdee. I loved this series. I remembered Hawkman from cartoons mostly, and had never seen him in a comic before. Well, in Hawkworld, he and Hawkwoman (“I haven’t been a ‘girl’ in a long time.” Shayera Thal) were from a planet called Thanagar. They ended up coming to earth as part of a consulate mission where they’re told superheroes are cool so they’re going to be presented as such to people and since their uniforms make em look like Hawks… I think you can figure out the rest.
IF I remember correctly, there was also a Thanagarian bad guy running loose on our world, and Hawkman was determined to find him and kill him.
I want to say that I collected this entire series. It was very different; sort of like Batman in that there was police work, but you also had that SciFi/space vibe going on that never quite went away. The art was great, the writing excellent – really a great series. I’ve no idea what they’re doing with these characters now, but I sure hope they haven’t screwed em up or dumbed em down. This series was smart and slick and that’s how I want to remember it.
Now I’m going to leave you with some random covers to droll over:
