Okay. So. I’m all caught up on the CW Show ‘Supernatural’ (thanks to some DvD purchases – still have a few episodes from this season to watch on the old TiVo though…) and I have to say, this is a really excellent show!
I was trying to figure out why I didn’t watch it from the beginning and I remembered that it debuted at a time when I was trying really hard to curtail my television viewing. I was doing only four or five shows/hours at the time and didn’t want to get hooked on any others. That worked out well for me at the time as I was incredibly productive and got a lot of stuff done, but it also meant that I missed out on some good tv.
If you don’t already know the story, Supernatural is about a couple of brothers who crisscross the country in a 67 Chevy Impala chasing the supernatural. They fight demons, ghosts, restless spirits, urban legends, Djinn – you name it, they fight it.
They were taught this unusual trade by their father who, after his wife was killed by a demon, became a Hunter. His sons follow suit when he disappears and they have to figure out why.
I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, but I do want to stress that this show is really done well. The writing, the characters, the music, the humor, the grit – it all fits together very nicely. I love the relationships between the brothers and their relationship with their father. I especially liked the way they snapped to like little soldiers when he showed up, and an episode where, like brothers are oft to do, they tortured each other with little pranks and jokes while working the job. (Dean’s hand super glued to the beer bottle was priceless!) I love the creature of the week plots along with the season long arcs, the FX are really snazzy and they make it feel real enough that you might think twice the next time you hear that noise coming from the closet…
Supernatural – 3 seasons out on DvD and the 4th about to finish up on the CW. Check it out.
