April Fools Day Jokes

So.  There’s ton’s of great pranks out on the web today, and I thought I’d share some of my favorites with you.

First up is Tor.com’sopen letter to our readers‘ wherein they announce that the website is changing to TÖRdötCÖM (a nice little stab at the SciFi Channel’s switch to syphilis.  Er, SyFy…).  From the letter:

“In an effort to distance ourselves from our fellow Macmillan property, Tor Books, Tor.com is hereby announcing that our website will henceforth be known as TÖRdötCÖM. While this move may come as a surprise to some in the SF/Fantasy community, we believe that the name change will allow us to maintain a link with the success and history of Tor, the largest publisher of Science Fiction and Fantasy, while moving forward into the 21st Century without the baggage of musty, old, outdated, disease-carrying books (and the musty, old, outdated fandom who love them).”

Tor.com also had this gem, which I found hilarious: Fox cancels Joss Whedon.

“Despite early indications to the contrary from network executives, FOX announced that Joss Whedon will be cancelled, most likely by marketing-assisted suicide.”

There’s oh so much more on Tor.com – check it out for yourself.

Google has CADIE (Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity), the ‘world’s first “artificial intelligence” tasked-array system’, who has her own website/blog, youtube channel and everything.  Apparently, she’s not to happy with Google engineers…

ThinkGeek (oh, thank god I love these), has several offerings including:

Unicorn Chaser. “Hey, remember how awful you felt that time you were clicking on the internets and you saw a picture of your grandmother parasailing naked off the coast of Bermuda? Remember how your eyes, brain, and lunch all threatened to leave your body at once? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a magical elixir that would rid your body and mind of those icky feelings? Well, now there is: the Unicorn Chaser.”

Interactive Portal T-Shirts. “ThinkGeek has teamed up with the GLaDOS computer and Aperture Science Labs to bring you an amazing re-creation of the Portal Gun in a convenient T-Shirt based format.”

Squeez Bacon. “Every once in a while a product comes around that puts life into perspective. When we got our first bottles of Squeez Bacon (from Sweden) to taste test, we each had a moment of pure revelation. For years, we had thought that the BBBLBT (Bacon-Bacon-Bacon-Lettuce-Bacon-Tomato) sandwich was the pinnacle of gastronomic enjoyment. And suddenly, after a single taste of Squeez Bacon, our world was rocked.”

USB Pet Rock. “Let’s face it: even if you take the time to learn about it, history repeats itself. Everything that’s old becomes new, and the Pet Rock fad of the 70s is no exception. But we’ve added our own touch to the phenomenon: a USB cable. What does it do? Abso-frickin-lutely nothing. And therein lies the beauty, for this is, without a doubt, the greenest USB gadget ever created (it draws absolutely no electricity).”

If I see anything else noteworthy, I’ll be sure to post it!  🙂
